SHERA Board in Temporary ‘Windstopper Façade’ Systems

SHERA Boards are fire resistant to Class A1 boards according to EN13501 standards and are also rot and insect resistant and able to stand up to varying weather conditions. The low coefficient of thermal expansion means SHERA Boards can stand wide temperature ranges without expanding/shrinking. They are extremely robust and have been fully tested to EN12467 standards.

As SHERA Boards are designed to be used as an exterior wall boards, it is possible to apply insulation as well as render and other facade materials directly to the boards.

SHERA Boards can be used as a temporary so-called ‘Windstopper’ application together with SHERA’s own PU sealant to form a wind proof and waterproof sealed joint façade; or with a UV tape to form a membrane along the joints.

SHERA Board can be installed as part of a 'windstopper' application using one of two different jointing methods.

The result: a tough, long lasting facade giving protection from the elements while an on-going construction project is completed.

SHERA Board Used on Drywall Application for Office Building

This reference project shows construction of an office building, built as part of an existing factory, that uses a lot of SHERA materials.

The images below show the construction in progress, showing the steel structure and suitability of SHERA boards for drywall applications.

You can clearly see the exterior building boards taking shape on the facing wall (SHERA Board 12mm thickness), along with the circular window design using SHERA Board 6mm.

Circular Windows

In the design above you will notice the inclusion of circular windows.

SHERA Boards 6mm thickness was used for this type of circular window construction due to their high degree of flexibility.

Interior Wall

SHERA Deco Board was used for the interior too, due to the decorative surface profile and will be coloured green.

There will also be a red board feature in the interior, which will be standard 12mm SHERA Board.

There is also a red board feature in the interior wall, which uses a standard 12mm SHERA Board, cut to a striking design and painted in situ.

SHERA Boards Used in Exterior Wall and Curved Porthole Application in Cyprus

This is an interesting and striking application for SHERA Boards which also shows there extreme versatility in terms of the flexibility of fibre cement boards.

The steel structure of the building is progressing with SHERA 12mm fibre cement boards being used on the exterior walls.

As we zoom in we can see the circular windows which have a diameter of 1.20 metres, thus R= 600mm, which makes it a very demanding task with a requirement for a high degree of flexibility for the board material being used.

SHERA 4mm fibre cement board was a perfect match for this application and worked very easily in achieving those curves. As you can see from the image below the project is progressing nicely!

Project Parameters

The existing building was of the wrong architectural style required and had been deteriorating for some time - a renovation was needed. And, it was needed fast, economically and had to be of a contemporary architectural style.

Solution - Use Drywall Construction Materials and Methods

The first step was to take apart all the unnecessary elements of the wall/facade.

Exterior walls were created with SHERA Board (10mm), steel studs and insulation.

An architectural façade was created with steel and covered with 8mm SHERA Board

The solution was elastic as it is critical to consider material applications that tolerate movement.

Furthermore a breathable façade was required since the old building might have suffered from humidity concentrations.

Wooden Appearance Facade Using SHERA Strip

Wooden support battens were placed in 600mm c.c.

The support battens and the background area were painted with a black water repellent; then SHERA Strips were fixed with a nail gun onto the wooden battens.

Panel Appearance with SHERA Boards

Square cut boards in dimensions of 8*700 * 1200 mm were placed on top of the façade as a finished material.

PU was placed 10mm inside of board edges before installation for water proofing

Render of Exterior Drywall on Housing Projects

This article is about how SHERA Boards can be used on an external drywall application, on housing or villa type projects in this case, in a butt joint installation with render, to give a seamless joint appearance on an exterior wall.

Install 10mm or 12mm board as per the installation instructions using butt joints with SHERA PU sealant to prevent water penetration through the joints.

In the image below you can see the joint between the SHERA fibre cement boards prior to rendering.

Apply SHERA cement bonding is applied to the surface of the boards to prevent excessive dust and improve the bonding of the render. This is optional but suggested to eliminate dust and to reduce cleaning effort at the construction site.

Apply the first coat of render, followed by a mesh layer when the first coat is wet. Once this has dried apply the top render coat as per the manufacturer's instructions. Apply elastomeric coating or paint as required/per the design requirements.

The finished result is a seamless exterior rendered wall. In this particular reference photo the building is a villa, but this can also be applicable for any number of projects such as garages, car ports, house extensions and so on.
